How to Safety-Proof Your Home
You always want your home to be a comfortable and safe place for you to relax after a long day’s work. Unfortunately, the typical home is simply full of potential safety hazards. If you aren’t careful, your home could cause you or someone you love serious injury. So you’ve got to plan ahead to prevent these safety threats. If you are unsure of where to start, check out my tips below.
1. Clear your home of potential tripping hazards. If common walkways in or around your home are cluttered with unnecessary items, it’s time to remove them. Children’s toys or shoes can be incredibly dangerous to leave on the floor. You will also want to securely fasten the rugs in your home to the floor.
2. Make sure there are no potential poisoning hazards in your home, especially if you have children or pets. Keep all of your filthy auto parts, cleaning supplies and other caustic substances in a high safe place, away from a child or pet’s reach.
3. Avoid slippery surfaces. This is an easy way for someone to injure themselves. You’ll want to make sure that your hardwood and tile floors are clean, but do not wax them. You’ll also want to cover as much with rugs as possible. Also make sure that you have bath mats in your shower to prevent unnecessary falls.
4. Prevent electrical hazards. Do not mess with electrical wiring in your home if you are unsure; instead call an electrician to comb through all of the wiring in your home. And make sure that all of your electrical circuits and outlets are covered.
5. Prevent fire and burn hazards. Make sure that you stove and oven is always turned off when not in use. Keep young children out of the kitchen when you are cooking.
